Rugby Premier League to Introduce Women’s Franchises in Season 2; Hyderabad to Host Draft

In a landmark moment for Indian rugby, the HSBC Rugby Premier League (RPL) is set to introduce women’s franchises in its second season. This historic step, announced by GMR Sports in partnership with Rugby India, marks a transformative push towards gender inclusivity in one of India’s fastest-growing sports properties.

Building on the strong momentum from the league’s inaugural 2025 edition, four existing men’s teams will now field women’s squads:

  • Chennai Bulls
  • Delhi Redz
  • Mumbai Dreamers
  • Kolkata Banga Tigers (formerly Kalinga Black Tigers)

The player draft and auction for both the four women’s teams and six men’s teams, including Hyderabad Heroes and Bengaluru Bravehearts, will be held on April 30 in Hyderabad.

This development is expected to significantly elevate India’s rugby landscape, inspire young athletes, and strengthen the league's national footprint.

Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India, shared:
“It has always been our dream to have an RPL Women edition. This year that dream comes to fruition… Our Indian women are superb! Come and witness the action in Hyderabad!”

Sujoy Ganguly, CMO, GMR Sports, added:
“The inclusion of women’s teams is a natural and important progression. It reflects our commitment to nurturing talent across genders and elevating rugby in India.”

Season 2 of the HSBC Rugby Premier League will be held from June 16–28, 2026, at Gachibowli Stadium, Hyderabad, promising even higher excitement, stronger competition, and wider audience appeal.
