When a Flooded Road Became a Waterway
Gurugram’s monsoon waterlogging is a familiar annual challenge for commuters. But this year, one flooded road witnessed an unusual sight a branded boat sailing through the middle of the city.
Cars24 turned the city’s waterlogged streets into the backdrop for a cheeky marketing activation, placing a branded boat on a flooded stretch of road. What began as a humorous commentary on Gurugram’s recurring monsoon chaos soon took an unexpected turn when the boat started helping stranded commuters navigate the flooded route.
The activation quickly caught public attention, transforming an everyday problem into a highly shareable brand moment.
From Marketing Stunt to Real-World Utility
Prachi Sharma, Head of Brand and Communications at Cars24, shared the activation on LinkedIn, describing the idea as a tongue-in-cheek experiment where “the road” effectively became “a river.”
The original intent was simple: use humour to highlight the city’s notorious waterlogging. However, as the rain intensified and the water level rose, the boat became more than just a branding prop.
People began using it to cross the flooded stretch, with rowing offering a faster and more practical alternative to navigating through the waterlogged road.
That unexpected shift gave the activation a second layer one where a marketing idea became useful in the real world.
₹50,000: The Number That Created Confusion
The activation generated another wave of attention after Cars24 mentioned a figure of ₹50,000 in connection with the stunt.
The amount was initially interpreted in some reports as a traffic challan issued to Cars24 for deploying the boat on the flooded road. However, Gurugram Traffic Police later clarified that no such ₹50,000 challan had been issued and that the boat had not been impounded.
Cars24 subsequently clarified that ₹50,000 represented the cost of executing the marketing activation, rather than a traffic penalty.
The clarification added another twist to an already unusual campaign that had rapidly gained traction online.
A Familiar Monsoon Marketing Playbook
Cars24’s activation also brings back memories of brands using monsoon-related challenges as opportunities for creative outdoor marketing.
In 2009, Aircel executed a utility-focused outdoor campaign in Mumbai by placing inflatable lifeboats on billboards at flood-prone locations, including the Milan subway. The boats were designed to offer assistance during flooding, with reports suggesting that one was eventually used when the subway flooded.
While Aircel’s idea was planned around utility from the outset, Cars24’s activation took a different route. It started with humour and brand visibility but evolved organically into something practical when commuters began using the boat.
Why the Activation Worked
The Cars24 stunt demonstrates how brands can turn a highly relatable local issue into a conversation starter.
Instead of simply talking about Gurugram’s waterlogging, Cars24 visually exaggerated the situation by treating a flooded road like an actual waterway. The branded boat created an instantly recognisable image—one that was unusual enough to attract social media attention.
The unexpected commuter use of the boat further strengthened the story, giving the activation an element that traditional advertising cannot easily manufacture: genuine public participation.
It also created multiple layers of conversation around the brand from humour and creativity to utility and the realities of urban infrastructure.
From Viral Moment to Brand Conversation
At its core, the Cars24 activation is an example of how contextual marketing can turn a familiar problem into a memorable brand interaction.
The campaign did not require an elaborate traditional advertising format. Instead, it used the environment itself as the medium. A flooded Gurugram road became the stage, a boat became the creative idea, and commuters became an unplanned part of the activation.
The result was a marketing moment that extended beyond brand visibility and became part of the public conversation around the city’s monsoon experience.
As the activation gained traction, Cars24 also invited people to share whether their own cities face similar flooding challenge taking the conversation beyond Gurugram.
The Bigger Marketing Lesson
The Cars24 boat stunt highlights the growing importance of contextual and experiential marketing. When brands respond creatively to situations that consumers are already experiencing, the communication can feel more immediate, relevant and authentic.
The most interesting part of this activation may not have been the boat itself, but how quickly its role changed from a humorous advertising prop to an unexpected commuting solution.
For marketers, it is a reminder that the strongest brand moments are sometimes created when a campaign interacts naturally with the real world.
