Instagram users have expressed frustration on various social media platforms about an influx of violent and NSFW (not safe for work) content appearing in their feeds, even with the Sensitive Content Control feature activated. Many users are uncertain whether this issue is caused by a glitch or a change in the algorithm, as graphic videos continue to surface. In response, Meta issued an apology on Thursday, acknowledging the problem and attributing it to a “mistake” that led to an inappropriate surge of disturbing content being recommended on Instagram’s Reels page. The company assured users that they are actively working on a solution, as reported by CNBC.
A Meta spokesperson issued a statement to CNBC, explaining, “We are fixing an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologize for the mistake.”
Meta’s policy is designed to protect users from harmful and graphic content by removing particularly violent or disturbing material. The company strictly prohibits content that depicts dismemberment, exposed internal organs, or charred bodies, as well as sadistic comments about human or animal suffering. Meta also has clear guidelines on handling graphic content, allowing certain instances if they serve to highlight human rights violations, conflicts, or acts of terrorism. However, even in these cases, such content is often subject to warning labels or other restrictions to ensure users are appropriately cautioned before viewing.
The unexpected appearance of such content on Instagram has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the platform’s content moderation systems. Many users are now questioning whether the issue was a one-time error or indicative of a deeper problem with how sensitive content is being handled by the platform. Meta’s swift apology signals its recognition of the issue, but the real test will be how quickly and effectively it can resolve the situation, especially as users expect greater transparency and control over their online experiences. This incident may also push the company to reassess its algorithm and policies around content recommendations, ensuring that similar issues do not occur in the future.
